The Six Principles of Nurture

The Six Principles of Nurture:

These principles guide our approach to creating a supportive and enriching environment for all children at Mill Lodge. These principles are central to our commitment to fostering the emotional, social and academic development of every child. We believe that by adhering to these principles, we can ensure that each child at Mill Lodge feels safe, valued and understood.

Behaviour - All behaviour is communication

We recognise that behaviour is a form of communication. By understanding and interpreting behaviours, we can address the underlying needs and provide appropriate support.

Safety - Mill Lodge classrooms offer a safe base

Our classrooms are a place where our children feel welcome and at ease. Organisation of resources, structure of routines and predictability of adult behaviour are key. A classroom where adults are reliable and consistent in their approach towards young people fosters learning.

Wellbeing – The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing

Nurturing relationships are key to emotional well-being. We promote the welfare and wellbeing of children and staff. We celebrate achievements and attainments and value pupil voice.

Learning – Children’s learning is understood developmentally

We appreciate that each child develops at their own pace. Our teaching strategies are tailored to meet the developmental stages of our children, ensuring that learning is meaningful and accessible to all.

Language – Language is a vital means of communication

Effective communication is essential for learning and relationships. We emphasise the development of language skills to help children express themselves clearly and confidently.

Transitions – The importance of transitions in children’s lives

We know our children experience many transitions throughout their lives and on a daily basis. We understand the emotions that may be triggered by these changes and provide guidance and support to help children navigate their way through these changes smoothly.

These principles reflect our dedication to nurturing the whole child. We aim to empower our children to thrive both academically and emotionally. Together we can ensure that every child at Mill Lodge feels safe, supported and ready to reach their full potential.
